asia cupBangladesh, Tuesday, March 4 – Audience at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka witnessed the victory of Sri Lanka, who have beaten Afghanistan by massive 129 runs on March 3. Journey of Sri Lanka in the tournament has been great so far. They not only defeated Pakistan, winner of Asia Cup 2012, but also India, who are known for crumbling them for several times in big matches.

In the midst of bright day, Afghanistan were confident enough as they registered first victory of the series a couple of days ago, beating Bangladesh in a nail biting contest. Although they lost the toss against Sri Lanka on Monday and had to bowl first, yet the team seemed absolutely balanced in the starting overs as Mirwais Ashraf and Shapoor Zadran did a good job with the new ball. Ashraf made Kusal Perera to leave the crease when he was batting at the score of 33 runs, and Zadran trapped Lahiru Thirimanne, who contributed just 5 runs in the team’s total. Mahela Jayawardene dismissal at 14 runs by 25 year old Ashraf was no less than a shock for Sri Lanka. But then arrived Kumar Sangakkara, who has been performing superbly in the series and also played the knock of 76 runs yesterday too, before being the victim of a brilliant Mohammad Nabi’s run out.

Dinesh Chandimal and Chathuranga de Silva scored 26 and 17 runs, respectively, before throwing their wickets to Hamza Hotak and Dawlat Zadran. Skipper Angelo Mathews and Thisara Perera remained not out at the score of 45 and 19 runs, respectively. After 50 over, Sri Lanka put a total of 253 runs on the score board on the loss of 6 wickets.

Chasing the target, Afghanistan had a wobbly start as its opening pair Mohammad Shahzad and Noor Ali Zadran were able to hit just 7 and 21 runs, correspondingly. The new batsman Asghar Stanikzai was able to add 21 runs and gave his wicket to Thisara Perera on his one of the best spells. Apart from captain Nabi, who scored 37 runs hitting three boundaries and a six, there was no one else who could stand firmly at the other end. Nawroz Mangal was out at 4 runs, Samiullah Shenwari at 6 runs and Najibullah Zadran at 11 runs. Mirwais Ashraf and Hotak were out at 1 run apiece. Dawlat Zadran was out at zero.Within 3 runs, Afghanistan lost their three wickets that made Sri Lankan squad to emerge as a winner and book a confirm seat in the finals, which will be played on March 8.

Pakistan and Bangladesh, the winner and runner of the earlier edition of Asia Cup will contend each other on Tuesday. India will look forward to the hosts to crush both Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Beside this, Virat Kohli and his potential ‘playing 11’ would have to defeat Afghanistan with a bonus point in the upcoming matach. Things will turn in favor of India only if the aforementioned conditions get fulfilled. On the whole, it is definite that Sri Lanka who will try to give a terrific competition to the other team during the weekend, but it is yet unsure who will be the next to seal berth to the final match. Gloomy picture will get cleared in the coming two days.
